One thing is certainly clear from the beginning of this project... Jazmine is taking ownership of her sexuality and exploring the journey that comes from it. A freedom generally denied to women and used by men for empowerment, Jazmine is not shy about flipping the script here.
She explores the projects concept through 6 tales titled after a woman which then get expounded by the songs that follow each. The tales explore a variety of sexual themes and situations that result.
As a concept project it all works. From the structure of tracks following interludes, to what tracks follow each interlude and their subject matter. While several of the songs have been released in the months leading up to now they each get enhanced due to the interludes the precede them. Often i find myself sometimes skipping the songs I've heard already when listening to a full project, especially if I've experienced them multiple times and they just haven't hit for me. In the case of Heaux Tales i actually found myself liking the tracks more in the full project even if they hadn't moved me previously.
Jazmine plays with her vocals in a variety of contemporary styles which works nicely with those she has featured on the project. Understand it is a concept album, don't come expecting a project full of vocal powerhouse ballads, it's not present here. But don't let that take away from what Heaux Tales is. There are certainly moments where Jazmine allows her vocals to sine, especially with some background arrangements. Some have compared it to Lauryn Hill's "Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" and in that estimation of reflecting contemporary hip hop and R&B i would certainly agree.
Clocking in just over 30 minutes i actually found myself wanting another tale or two from the songstress.
