This week marks the 10th anniversary of Ciara's 4th album Basic Instinct. Commercially the album was unsuccessful continuing a downward trend that had started with her 3rd album Fantasy Ride. Ciara felt that she didn't receive proper support from her label LaFace Records, a claim she also had with her 3rd album, and asked to be released from her contract with the label.
The album title was inspired by the 1992 film of the same name which starred Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas. It was supposed to represent a return to her roots which produced her debut success in Goodies. While holding average reviews from many critics it did produce the smash "Ride" featuring rapper Ludacris.
