2020 certainly hasn’t been kind to the world but it certainly has provided a space for Megan (Meg) Thee Stallion to explode onto the scene. 2 #1 singles on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, the Cardi B collab WAP hit #1 here in NZ while Savage featuring Beyonce peaked at #2. A highly touted performance on Saturday Night Live and leading conversation about the protection of black women after an incident with rapper Tory Lanez. As an example of her impact she was named on Time Magazine’s annual list as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Its only right she drop her debut studio album Good News before the year was out with all this momentum.
The album has been anticipated since October 2019 when the rapper first discussed plans about dropping a debut studio album. Those plans would turn into her 3rd EP Suga. Good News was officially announced via social media on November 12.
Whether you’ve been following Meg since her underground days in 2016 releasing tracks on Soundcloud or a new fan with her burst onto the pop scene you are no stranger to her confidence and sex-positivity found in a lot of her songs. This trend continues throughout Good News.
“Body” which is the 3rd single released alongside the album features a video that displays Megan in all her strengths: strong rapping and twerking her derriere. The video has led to a #BODYODYCHALLENGE on social media.
The album includes appearances from SZA, 2 Chainz, and DaBaby just to name a few. Some prominent samples include “Who Shot Ya” by Notorious B.I.G. and Adina Howard’s 1995 hit “Freak Like Me”. Everything is complimentary here. Good News doesn’t rely on the features or samples and there is nothing offered that upstages Meg. Megan Thee Stallion does an outstanding job of riding the beats presented and rapping in a clear manner that is a throwback to past days of hip hop.
Highlights:
Work That: features a sample of Juvenile’s 2006 single Rodeo with Megan boasting about her sexual prowess
Intercourse: Comes across like the soundtrack for a sexy island vacation with that special mate in your life. It’s only one verse from Meg which leaves you wanting a bit more but its sandwiched between a Popcaan chorus that brings back the reggaeton influences that were found in early 00s hip hop.
