Marcel Theo Hall better known as Biz Markie died on July 16th. He was also known as the "Clown Prince of Hip Hop." The rapper, singer-songwriter, DJ and producer was best known for his 1989 single "Just A Friend." It is commonly referenced on lists featuring the greatest hip hop songs of all time.
He was the subject of a landmark court ruling in the 90s which altered the landscape of hip hop. Grand Upright Music vs Warner Bros. Records. This was the ruling that found that all samples must be cleared with the original artist before being used. As a result interpolation (replaying the sample using new instruments) has become the prevalent trend in the industry.
Rumours of his death were circulating on social media at the beginning of the month. Biz had been dealing with Type 2 diabetes for years and recently had some severe complications. It was confirmed by his team this weekend that he did pass this weekend at the age of 57.
