After the release of his critically-acclaimed debut album, Big Baby D.R.A.M., multiple GRAMMY nominee Shelley FKA DRAM has spent the past few years not only working on new music, but also working on himself personally. Ever since he was introduced to the world with his songs, "Cha Cha," and "Broccoli," the multi-platinum singer's career has allowed him to meet people like Rick Rubin, Snoop Dogg, Beyonce and Erykah Badu. He's traveled the globe, toured with Kendrick Lamar and performed at Coachella. A stop was even made here in New Zealand back in 2017.
With all that going on he eventually decided to take some time to focus on improving his health, voice and personal growth. Now he has decided to re-introduce himself with his government name.
"It's like a new beginning. Full circle. So this time, call me Shelley." he says, following the mood setting opening track "Exposure."
You can definitely see the effect of some of his lifestyle changes. The silk pajamas and slippers he's rocking, that have replaced the trench coat and beanie, show off a slimmer man. His Tiny Desk performance demonstrates a shift from the lighthearted melodic hip-hop we got in his debut to full on R&B crooner. This shouldn't be much of a surprise to those who have been following his career. This vibe certainly comes off as more representative of who he is as Shelley.
Shelley FKA DRAM's performance certainly has us looking forward to his new self-titled project that is dropping on April 29.
